Here is a step-by-step guide to building and configuring a dropdown menu, based on the instructions from the sources: For a visual explanation, check out our instructional video via this link: [Link to instructional video].
Step 1: Create a new menu
Start in the back office
Go to Sales Channels > navigate to your online store’s channel > navigate to Settings, scroll down, and click Menus at the bottom.
Create a new menu and give it a clear name and an alias (for example, “Sale of Women’s Clothing”).
Step 2: Add menu items You can now add different types of items to your menu:
Text Only: Add a menu item that consists solely of text.
Link: Add a URL (for example, a link to a page on your own website or an external page).
Product category: Link an existing category (such as “posters”) to the menu. You can customize the display name of this category in the menu as desired (for example, to “Batman posters”), while the link will continue to point to the underlying “posters” category.
Specific Product: Link directly to a specific product in your store.
Space: Add a “space” to create more visual white space between the different menu items.
Step 3: Define sublevels and structure
To set up the hierarchy of your dropdown, drag items below one another.
For example, place specific products directly under the main category (such as “Batman posters”) to create a logical second level.
Click "Save" once you’re satisfied with the layout.
Step 4: Placing the Menu in the Header
Go back to the Builder. It may help to clear your cache and reload the page first.
Go to your header settings and locate the main menu where you want the dropdown to appear. It’s common to place this under a “text-only” item (e.g., the text “About Us” or “Laptops”), so that this main item itself doesn’t link anywhere when clicked. However, it’s possible to add a link to it.
Add the menu you just created to this main section.
Select “Dropdown menu” as the display style.
Step 5: Enable Hierarchy and Publish
Important step: Make sure to enable the setting that shows different levels. If you forget to check this option, all items will be placed on the same level, and you’ll miss the effect of a second submenu level.
Click Publish to apply the changes.
Finally, reload your online store page to test whether the dropdown menu expands properly and whether all links and categories are pointing to the correct locations. We hope this is clear.
